When mobile phones first became commonplace, there were always fears about the dreaded roaming charges when you went abroad.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2017, we haven’t had to worry about these charges, but in the event of a no-deal Brexit, we may have to start worrying again!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s everything you need to know about roaming charges, and which networks definitely won’t be affected.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are Roaming Charges?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Roaming charges are surcharges applied by providers when a phone is used outside its home country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anytime you leave the UK, you’re deemed to be roaming, which means you can be charged a significantly higher rate for making calls, sending texts and using the internet while abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn’t uncommon to pay \u20ac0.27 per minute just to RECEIVE a call while roaming in Europe a few years ago!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Did the EU Affect Roaming Charges?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On 15th June 2017 the laws on roaming in the European Union changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From this date onward, UK travellers were free to use their regular monthly allowances of calls, texts and data in 28 EU locations for no extra charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Happens If We Leave the EU with a Deal?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If Britain leaves the European Union with a deal, current mobile rules will be extended until the end of 2020 at a minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means you’ll be entitled to all your regular monthly allowances. However, if you exceed these allowances, you’re at the mercy of the potentially extortionate roaming charges. Don’t be surprised if you’re paying \u00a37 for a single GB of data outside your package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Happens If We Leave the EU without a Deal?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If we don’t agree a deal before Brexit, the roaming charges could return immediately \u2014 it’ll basically be up to each network to decide what they charge us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UK Government’s line is that EU mobile operators will once again be able to charge UK firms for providing their services. And it’s up to each individual UK network whether they pass this cost onto its customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which Networks Will Reintroduce Roaming Charges After Brexit?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

MoneySavingExpert<\/a> asked all 16 major mobile phone networks about their plans after Brexit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only two said roaming will remain ‘free’ after Brexit, while 10 were unwilling to rule out roaming charges returning, and four haven’t responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are the results of their investigations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giffgaff<\/td>\u2718<\/td>“No plans” to introduce roaming charges, but when pressed couldn’t guarantee this.<\/td><\/tr>
iD Mobile<\/td>\u2718<\/td>“Too soon to assess the implications of Brexit on roaming regulations”, but currently has no plans to charge.<\/td><\/tr>
O2<\/td>\u2718<\/td>“No plans” to charge \u2013 it’s “working closely with the Government and other European operators to try and protect the current arrangements.”<\/td><\/tr>
Plusnet Mobile<\/td>\u2718<\/td>“No plans” to change \u2013 it hopes “Brexit negotiations will help ensure that UK operators can continue to offer great value.”<\/td><\/tr>
SkyMobile<\/td>?<\/td>No response.<\/td><\/tr>
Smarty<\/td>\u2714\ufe0e<\/td>“Committed to maintain the availability of roaming in the EU at no additional cost following Brexit.”<\/td><\/tr>
Talk Mobile<\/td>\u2718<\/td>“No plans” to introduce charges. It says: “We very much hope arrangements can be made which will ensure we can continue to offer UK consumers our roam-free service.”<\/td><\/tr>
Tesco Mobile<\/td>\u2718<\/td>“No plans” to introduce charges, but “monitoring” the situation and will give customers plenty of notice if things change.<\/td><\/tr>
The Phone Co-op<\/td>?<\/td>No response.<\/td><\/tr>
Three<\/td>\u2714\ufe0e<\/td>Says ‘free’ roaming will remain “regardless of Brexit negotiations.” Customers will be able to use “their usual allowances when they travel within the EU.”<\/td><\/tr>
TPO<\/td>?<\/td>No response.<\/td><\/tr>
Virgin Mobile<\/td>\u2718<\/td>Is “monitoring the progress of Brexit negotiations closely” \u2013 customers will be notified in advance of any change to its roaming policy after Brexit.<\/td><\/tr>
Vodafone<\/td>\u2718<\/td>“No plans” to introduce charges. It says: “We very much hope arrangements can be made which will ensure we can continue to offer UK consumers our roam-free service.”<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

If My Network Introduces Roaming Charges, What Can I Do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We should know more about this situation by the end of March. But if you’re planning a trip this summer and are worried about paying through the nose for your mobile phone usage, there could be a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
